Greetings and Salutations!
I’ve included a very special picture at the end of this post from our trip to Old Alabama Town. They usually don’t let groups sit in the desks at the schoolhouse. However, they were kind enough to let us. The man standing in the back portrays the original schoolmaster and does a marvelous job whipping the kids into shape. Mark your calendars for January 24-28th… the Book Fair will be in town!
Spelling: Unit 21… Our test will be on Friday.
Reading: Bound for Oregon… We will try to finish the book.
Language: Unit 4 “Adjectives” p. 141-145… We will shoot to have a test on Unit 4 on Thursday, January 27th.
Bible: Exodus 2-4
Math: We will have a test on 1-digit division tomorrow Tuesday, January 18th. The students have known about this test since last week. We will be skipping division with 2-digit divisors for a bit and come back to it. We will start Chapter 17, “Plane Figures,” on Wednesday completing pages 320-325.
Science: We will finish electromagnets on Tuesday. We will begin Chapter 4, “The Human Body,” on Wednesday starting with pages 184-185.
History: We will finish our Pioneer Flip Charts and begin the second part of Chapter 7 on pages 144-159.

Oh where... oh where are my little pioneers?
I've missed your faces! Remember, you will need to get up really early on Tuesday morning for the walk to school. Some of you have a mighty long way to travel and you can't leave home until your chores are completed. I'd hate to see some of you have to stand in the corner or have your hair tied up to a nail the first day back. You only have to wear shoes if you received a new pair when your family was able to sell your hog this winter. Of course, if you are lucky enough to catch a ride in a wagon, your journey might be quicker but it'll be really bumpy! When you arrive at school, you'll have some time to play with your friends before the school bell rings. So, if you have any marbles or jacks or any other "old" game, you may bring them. I can't wait to see you!

Here are a few pictures of the children enjoying our FOSS Kit on Electricity and Magnetism. I thought you might like to see what they are doing since you won't see their Science book for a while. This week we discussed the behavior of magnets and measured their force. You'll find our academic plans after the pictures.
The kids are separating items into two groups: "things that will stick to magnets" and "things that will not stick to magnets." Some interesting discoveries were made.
The kids are testing whether or not a magnet can attract
iron/steel through other materials.
The kids are learning about how "temporary magnets"
are made through "induced magnetism."
The kids are testing how distance affects the force of a magnet.
